I thought this was supposed to be easy?, The Great Autumn Headache of 2010

‘gone.’

between december 28th and january 3rd, i had 5 migraines in 6 days. i measure it differently, depending on my mood:

9 imitrex in 144 hours.

8 meals taken, 10 missed.

6 wet towels from 6 wet icepacks, who each dripped their condensation down the thin curls on the back of my neck.

unending orange gatorade, my favorite perk.

a new year’s without champagne or cheering — and blessedly snooki-free.

i called kooky doctor, got an appointment for the next day and received a new med — a beta blocker — as well as more anti-depressants in hopes that regulating the size of the blood vessels in my head LA LA SCIENCE SCIENCE would kill the headaches.

january 9th i woke up without a headache.

and then i had one — but just one! — surely that’s manageable, yes?

and another yesterday. and another today.

maybe i’ll never learn not to hope so much, maybe i’ll always be surprised when things don’t work out right.

for now i’m hiding in my bed with my gatorade. please send cheese.

Ouch. Migraines suck. I also suffer from them.

    • http://ohthatmeredith.com Meredith

i hate that. the prevalence of this shit is remarkable — which also makes me wonder why anyone (me?) could suffer so long without really good treatment — so many people have these!

wth. I am getting angry on your behalf. surely something can be done! I always thought life was supposed to be easier, too… but don’t give up hope, Mer. <3

Love, I am with you. I DIDN’T have one today! A MIRACLE! I feel like dancing!!! Hang in there, I know EXACTLY how you feel!!!!

    • http://ohthatmeredith.com Meredith

YES, that’s EXACTLY how a good day feels. i can’t fucking stand it.

Oh, sweetie, how I hate the migraines. HATE. I had a stretch where I had week long migraines for months. But! They’re better now. More manageable. Because I am more manageable. Or something.

It’ll get better, honey. I promise.

    • http://ohthatmeredith.com Meredith

thank you for saying that. ‘it will get better’ is the only thing that pulls me up. and now i sound like a gay teenager. hmm. i’m ok with that.

woman, I think we need to take drastic measures. as in, just procuring you a new head. what do you think?

have you tried a chiropractor? sometimes helps my migraines.

i’m waiting for new insurance to kick in — then you bet your ass i’ll see whatever doc i can get.

Good thing Gatorade isn’t made from actual gators, or you’d be personally responsible for their imminent extinction. Trying to look on the bright side (and failing).

    • http://ohthatmeredith.com Meredith

      you’re fucking adorable.

  • lindsey

Hey Mer – you may do this already, but are you looking at food sensitivities that cause migraines? I can’t drink Gatorade because there are ingredients that send me straight over the edge. I can send you a list or a book reference if you like. Also the diet I’m on isn’t totally restrictive, though I do eat less smelly cheese.

    • http://ohthatmeredith.com Meredith

iiiinteresting. i have looked at food sensitivities, but just soy, wheat, eggs, dairy & sugar. so far, nothing. hoping to get tested soon.

i would LOVE any info you’ve got, really.

i’ve had migraines my whole life, so i feel your pain. i don’t want to move; i barely want to exist. light hurts. noise hurts. silence hurts. it hurts to put my head on the pillow. misery. my doctor has me on a daily beta-blocker for prevention, and i can tell a small difference. i take maxalt dissovable tablets because imitrex doesn’t work for me. here are a few tips from one sufferer to another, in hopes that you get some relief:
    1. those blue gel refreezable ice packs are a godsend.
    2. have someone rub your neck and temples with bengay. you’ll smell like an old person, but it helps.
    3. if all else fails, try this. tie a scarf/rag/necktie/something around your head as tight as you can manage. the pain from the tight scarf is more bearable than the pain of a migraine. sounds like a sadist thing to do, but you’d be surprised.

i *always* get a migraine when it’s going to rain. changes in barometric pressure are a bitch.

hope you get to feeling better. and i really enjoy your blog!

i know exactly what you mean. i’m so sorry you suffer, too. interestingly, maxalt didn’t work for me & imitrex does, at least temporarily.

and i totally push on my head to feel that pain instead of the headache — the scarf is a brilliant, if sadistic, plan. thank you!
